Pressing Matters for CD (UK)

Pressing Matters for CD (UK)

ELKOM and LANGZAUNER, two leading names in press technology for the composites industry have been represented in the UK by CD (UK) Ltd for the last couple of years. The company's Machinery Division is the sole UK sales partner for both companies and is responsible for machine sales and after sales support.

ELKOM has pioneered the development of vacuum membrane pressing systems for composites and is recognised worldwide for its superior heating and cooling platen technology. LANGZAUNER's main focus is the design and manufacture of hydraulic moulding presses for carbon and composites.

Distributors of Corian® for over 30 years, CD (UK) has been key in the development of the solid surface market in the UK and, in addition to solid surface material supply, the company is also a leading power-tool distributor in the solid surface fabrication market. Heading up the sales operation for the machinery division is Eric Whorne who has spent most of his working life involved with press technology.

German company, Elkom, has been the leading innovator in heating and cooling vacuum systems for more than 25 years and has global experience with the pressing of composites and thermo-plastics. Its heating/cooling platen systems, casting tables, pre-heating machines, composite vacuum presses and thermoforming machines are successfully employed all over the world. The company also supplies its heating platens to other leading press manufacturers and has supplied over 80,000 units worldwide.

Elkom specialises in customised, energy-saving, membrane vacuum presses with heating and cooling top platens. Tailored solutions are designed according to customers' individual needs with requirements such as mould dimensions and weights, temperature, heating and cooling times, temperature uniformity and system control all taken into account. Other technical modifications include the addition of infrared heaters for the processing of sensitive composite components. Elkom vacuum presses are extensively employed in the composites industry and in laboratories and research establishments. At Manchester University, a composite vacuum press, supplied by Elkom, is installed within the National Composites Certification and Evaluation Facility.

The Langzauner company, based in North West Austria, designs, engineers and manufactures moulding press systems for compression moulding, and is universally recognised for its many advancements in press technology. For the composites industry the company's main focus is on hydraulic forming presses with pressure ranges from 600kN to 10,500kN. The range of moulding presses includes: high pressure and high temperature down-stroke presses; presses for composite parts with programmable pressures, heating and cooling; moulding presses for carbon components; PU-injection presses; and multi-daylight presses.

Both Elkom and Langzauner were quick to recognise the contribution that efficient moulding of composites could make in the drive to manufacture lighter, less costly components and first committed resources into the development of special presses when the composites industry was in its infancy. Today, they each have enviable reputations in the sector for providing innovative, high-quality, well proven solutions.

Eric Whorne says: ‘Elkom and Langzauner are fine companies to represent and the fact that they themselves are established trading partners provides CD (UK) with an unmatched portfolio of products allowing us to always offer the most suitable and cost effective press system for any given application.’
