Corian® is the multi-talented solution to creating a ‘Luxe’ look in Liverpool

The new kitchen in the penthouse apartment of a chic Liverpool tower block overlooking the waterfront has all the look of the luxe stones and finishes that were requested, achieved with all the ease, reliability and sophistication of Corian®. When architect Paul O’Hare was given a brief by his world-travelling clients (with a penchant for the glamour of Dubai) to create the perfect kitchen for social gatherings during their stays in the city, the material choice was an obvious one, as Paul is a long term fan of Corian®.

As part of the complete renovation of the apartment, Paul created an open plan kitchen / dining room by removing a former dividing wall. The original kitchen units were in great shape, so those were kept along the rear wall, and all appliances repositioned to the side. The old worktops were removed, and replaced with Corian® in richly veined Hazelnut, which also forms the surface of the impressive, bespoke 12-seater dining table, which is cantilevered from the addition of a feature island unit, also topped in Corian® in a complementary tone of warm, textured Rosemary. The island is clad in stone and slate to match the rear wall.

Paul O’Hare has optimised Corian® in rich Hazelnut (wall unit worktops and table) and Rosemary (island unit) to dramatic effect in a luxurious penthouse apartment overlooking the Liverpool waterfront. The table top features specially created ‘shadow effect’ grooves, to mimic the look of sections of marble.

The dining table presented a particular challenge, not only because of its 5.7m x 2.7m tapering dimensions, but also because Paul wanted to recreate the effect of marble with this particular piece. To create a complex table top out of separate pieces of stone would have been both difficult and prohibitive in cost, so Paul had the inspired idea of optimising the striking mineral aesthetics of Corian® in Hazelnut, but adding a groove every two seating places, which was then infilled with dye to create a sectional shadow effect. The centre of the table has a cut away with an integrated insert in walnut and crystal, backlit to dramatic effect.

“The clients are absolutely delighted,” says Paul, “they are spending more time than they expected to in the city because they love the new apartment, and grown up family are also coming to stay more often to enjoy all it has to offer. Corian® is generally my first choice of premium materials, whether for high-end home projects or retail or commercial designs, because its quality and adaptability never lets me down.”
