Sergey Estrin, founder of The Sergey Estrin Architectural Studio in Moscow has created a spectacular themed reception desk using Corian® at the heart of the Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Institute.
The Vision Care Institute is a professional education centre for vision care specialists. This part of Johnson & Johnson is perhaps best known for its ACUVUE soft contact lenses production.
This particular office is found in a new build property with “dramatic views to Krymsky Bridge and Joan The Warier ancient church” in the Yakimanka district of Moscow. The Sergey Estrin Architectural Studio has already completed a successful project for Johnson & Johnson where acrylic glass eyelashes were first used. The client enjoyed seeing an element symbolising their business being used in the design so this idea was used for the second office as well.
Taking a Closer Look
At the heart of new office is a Corian® reception desk that makes full use of the thermoforming properties of the material to create the effect of an eye as the focus of the welcoming area.
Above the Corian® desk hang “eyelashes” made of lighted acrylic glass. Sergey Estrin explains that “The “lashes” now have «+» and «-» signs in cross section, exactly like contact lens dioptre. Each eyelash has its own inclination angle thus creating one smooth line much resembling a real eyelid”.
Another Point of View
When design can combine a theme and practical requirements the results can extraordinary. Because Corian® can be curved in long seamless flows this desk becomes the lower eyelid. Incorporating the upper lid, also in Corian® is a masterstroke that gives the visitor to this corporate learning environment a true sense of what the company is about as well as adding a sense of fun and inventiveness to the office environment.
We have been distributing Corian® and solid surface tools for over 30 years now and are passionate about providing our Corian® fabricators with the best possible levels of service. We offer high quality technical support to Corian® fabricators as well as helping them with more complex work such as thermoforming.
