Corian® fabricatorsDatum Contracts have just completed their largest Corian® project to date, for shopping centre company Intu Properties, at their centre in Uxbridge. Datum were required to manufacture a unique and challenging new customer service counter for the shopping centre which has 12 million people passing through it each year. The designs for the counter were done by Landor Associates and after some work to bring them to life, everyone involved knew that the counter would look absolutely stunning.
Corian® was used to form curved and shaped 'ribbons' that flow from a central island desk and features various AV screens, seats and interactive activities, including Etch-a-Sketch tablets in low-level cupboards for children to explore. Orange LEDs in Intu's corporate colours highlight the ribbon shapes, which flow in a series of curves along the mall; at intervals the ribbons appearing to disappear into the floor and re-appear a few feet away. The job was a complex piece of work from the Corian® counter's point of view - apart from the thermoforming required to create the soft curves and shapes it has also been built to go in a sloping mall on a 1:20 gradient which means that the counter runs across the slope at angles. To ensure that the project would work in such surroundings, Datum even went to the lengths of building a mock up of the mall floor on the correct gradient in their factory. True commitment to a perfect job.
