The Finalists for the prestigious KBBreview Awards for 2014 have been released and we were delighted to see so many kitchen retailers and designers nominated who display and regularly specify Corian®.
Kitchen Retailer of The Year
All four Finalists in this gold-standard award are displaying Corian® dealers. With two retailers in the North of England (Diane Berry Kitchens
Manchester and Rational Kitchens
Sheffield) up against two from Scotland (Kitchens by JS Geddes
Kilmarnock and Kitchens International
Edinburgh) it is interesting that there is no southern representation this year for the category. Whether this has happened by chance or perhaps showrooms further away from London's design centre feel that they have to make more of an effort to attract quality customers, the challenge has been laid down to southern retailers to fight back next year.
Diane Berry Kitchens
Northwest retailer, Diane Berry is nominated for the second successive year for this top award. The kitchen in the photo above is a great example of how Diane and her team love to use Corian® to provide unique and cutting edge design to their customers. As well as a wrap-around Corian® worktop the kitchen is dominated by a Corian® island that flows seamlessly into an eating area. Multi-functionality is the name of the game in kitchens that form the centre of family life and Corian® helps designers to match their customers' needs.
Kitchen Customer Service of the Year
Using a mystery shopper to assess customer service for this award means that only those showrooms that are at the top of their game will strike the right note and be selected for the shortlist.
It is fantastic to see bespoke kitchen manufacturer deVOL
from Loughborough on the list. They started fabricating Corian® during 2013 and are a rising star in the kitchen world with their mix of traditional and the more modern "Air" Kitchen range. As the mystery shopper said "I felt I was buying into a concept rather than just a kitchen".
Good luck in the same category to another Corian® displaying dealer, in-toto Bristol. Their focus is on making the kitchen work as part of the house as a whole. The kitchen rarely sits in splendid isolation to the rest of the house now so it is no surprise that this approach has led to recognition for them.

Kitchen Designer of the Year - Project cost over £50,000
Fighting it out in this category are two high quality Corian® fabricators.
Holloways of Ludlow
whose showroom is shown above, have a designer in Martin Smith who regularly uses Corian®. Being able to fabricate in-house is a major advantage for them as they are able to translate the designs into reality without a middle-man.
The result in the project that has been nominated is an outstanding blend of design and functionality. Space is always an issue for terraced homes in London. In this case the kitchen was too small for a dining table and a tv seating area. The solution was to create an island out of Glacier White Corian® that flows seamlessly into a dining table. Few products allow such a winning formula for a space-saving solution.
Here's what Martin Smith had to say himself about the nominated project:
"_Holloways of Ludlow were commissioned by our client to re-design their original kitchen from a poorly functioning and restricted space, into a welcoming, contemporary kitchen where their family could cook, eat and relax together. The design centered around the location, shape and orientation of the non-rectangular sculptured island made from Glacier White Corian®, and the irregular shape was key to allowing the room flow whilst serving three overlapping functions. Since the room was too small to accommodate a free-standing dining table in addition to a TV seating area, by choosing Corian® as a material for both the island and table, not only allowed me to design a visually appealing, seamless connection between the areas, but also provided a truly bespoke space-saving solution._
_When working with irregular shapes and arrangements, *Corian® really is the only material to consider*. The arrangement of a worktop level stepping down into table level, supported by facing sides also in Corian®, made up of 27 separately cut pieces, with each connection made to appear completely seamless and solid. The seamless connection also adding to the resulting rigidity of the resulting complete structure. The Corian® facets round the island were sculpted within 3D CAD using polygon modeling, then once the data could be extracted from the model, each of the 27 sections were individually cut from Corian® sheet, and then the grand scale puzzle built up piece by piece. The kitchen cabinets were also sprayed white to match the Glacier White Corian®, and extend along the wall into the TV area._
_Since Holloways of Ludlow is an approved Corian® fabricator, we regularly undertake not only using Corian® in domestic kitchen designs but also in large-scale commercial projects. We also love to combine Corian® with other materials such as wood, stone, steel and glass to enable the creation of beautiful, individual, bespoke kitchens for our clients._"

Also in this category is Andrew Rizza of Dream Design This Dorset based kitchen designer produces the most remarkable work and when using Corian® they turn to Counter Production to bring their concepts to life.
The photo above is a great example of both of their work. As Andrew says, "This contemporary residence is situated on the waters edge in Poole bay. The clients wanted a kitchen that harmonised with the Architecture whilst taking nothing away from the fantastic view. They chose Siematic S2 furniture in Titan Walnut and Corian® Glacier white work surfaces."
The Corian® allowed for the focal island to help Andrew with fulfilling his brief - "Once the position of the dining and living spaces had been established, I created an L shaped island to allow good interaction between all three areas".
We wish all this year's finalists the very best of British and thank them for their kind support of Corian® and the wonderful designs they come up with that keep pushing the boundaries of how we think of our beloved kitchen worktops.
