The kitchen at Brookside Farm situated in the heart of the Balderstone countryside really is the heart of a beautiful family home that has been renovated by Julia Walsh and her partner Chris.
When the couple moved into the property, the original 70s style kitchen was small and dated. As Julia recalls: “There was nothing wrong with it but we really wanted a kitchen that was a family room. Somewhere we could all get together to cook and socialise.”
When they started to look for a kitchen company that would enable them to create what they wanted, Julia spotted Katie Green of Heart of Your Home Kitchens on social media which featured photographs of some of Katie’s kitchen transformations.
“We really wanted a local independent business and we knew Katie had set up relatively recently. We went to see her and from our first meeting we didn’t look anywhere else.”
The couple wanted a modern look to their kitchen but not too contemporary that it would look out of place in their stone-built farmhouse. They also decided to knock down a wall to make the space bigger.
They opted for Fitzroy cabinets in Stone with chunky 60mm Corian worktops in Everest. As Katie from Heart of Your Home Kitchens explains: “The Corian worktop has a one-and-a-half bowl moulded sink, drainer and upstands making it really hygienic as there are no joints. It’s a really good choice.”
With Julia and Chris having four children between them they were keen to create a living space that was workable for them and their extended family: “We wanted something functional but with the ‘wow’ factor” says Julia, whose 14-year-old daughter is a keen cake maker, while Chris is also an enthusiastic cook.
“We also wanted something that wouldn’t date. Something that would still look great in 10 years time.”
When the couple went to see Katie at her stunning showroom in Waddington earlier this year they were shown various options and samples.
“Katie initially came to the house to get a feel for what we wanted and what would fit with our lifestyle. Dealing with her was so different from dealing with large kitchen companies.
“With so many styles and colours to choose from you can get a bit lost. But Katie was great, she was so patient.
We took home samples and compared them in various lights and eventually opted for the Stone colour and the chunky Everest Corian which really adds a touch of luxury.”
A large central island with pop-up sockets for laptops and phone chargers as well as seating was also on the couple’s wish list as the children often do homework in the kitchen. “Katie gave us the confidence to create a much bigger island than we originally thought and it works really well as it has also created a huge amount of storage space.”
Maximising storage space was one of Katie priorities and she was able to create a bespoke larder with automatic lighting when the doors are opened. There is also a pull-out larder unit in the kitchen as well as a small pull-out base unit for ease of access.
A tricky space near the back door was also maximised as Katie created an in-built seating area in the recess.
“Katie guided us and really made sure we got the best value,” adds Julia, who is thrilled with her new kitchen.
“It has been transformed! We are just so pleased with it. Katie very much worked with us and worked alongside our building team managing the kitchen fit. She was in constant contact with us, she is very open, honest and easy to work with – she is brilliant!”
